December is here! Can you believe it?
There is officially now only one month left in 2016. Where did the time go?
As the weeks continue to go by (typically in a rush), this is the time of year when people start to reflect on the year behind them. Did they accomplish all they had set out to accomplish in 2016? What were the highlights and lowlights, the ups and downs, the big wins and the unfortunate misses?
Of course, there’s no reason to focus too much on those misses because with a new year around the corner, a re-energized sense of “I can do it” energy surges like never before. People are motivated again to set new goals, to challenge themselves for the sake of self-improvement, and to move forward in the name of their dreams.
For the past couple of weeks, we’ve been making our way through a new series that revolves around planning for your success in 2017.
You see, it’s not enough to simply write down your goals on a piece of paper and hope for the best. You have to have a plan in place. A plan not only keeps you accountable to your goals but also gives you the guidance you need to continuously put one foot in front of the other toward whatever it is you want to accomplish.
Part of developing your plan for success is getting clear on what you want, how you want it, and what you need to do to get it, which is why in this series, I’ve been leading you through some powerful reflective questions that can help you organize your thoughts and reconnect with your deepest truths. Ultimately, the answers to these questions will allow you to create a strong foundation upon which you can build your dream life.
Today’s question is this: What/who do you need to let go of to reach a higher level in your life?
One of the hardest things we have to do in life is to let go of those things or people that are no longer serving a purpose in our lives.
This is something we’ve touched on in the past when it comes to the type of company you keep. Essentially, the idea is that you’re the sum total of the five people you spend the most time with. This is because we tend to mimic the mindsets and behaviors of those in our circle. So it’s time to get real honest with yourself and ask if that’s a good thing or a bad thing in your case.
For instance, do the people around you have big goals that they too are striving toward? Are they driven and ambitious? Are they positive and encouraging? Do they support you in the vision you have for your life? If not, it may be time to minimize the amount of time you spend with these people so that you can instead surround yourself with those who are creating the type of life you want to enjoy.
The same rule applies to other things as well: hobbies or habits or ways of thinking. What’s holding you back? What’s weighing you down? What’s forcing you to play small? With the beginning of a New Year just weeks away, it’s time to shed those people or things that we’ve already outgrown so that we can grow into a more powerful version of ourselves.
Today, spend some time reflecting on this question and going deep into who or what may be setting limits on your potential. Then create a plan to begin moving away from those people or things so that you can move forward and reach a higher level in your life.
